While Compton chronicles the rise and fall of the flagship gangsta rap group NWA - a period that spans nearly a decade from the late 1980s to 1996 - and features group members Ice Cube, Dr. Dre and the late Eazy-E as the film's three main characters. protagonists, Welcome to Death Row involves the years following NWA's formation, one of the most explosive and controversial periods in music history. It was a time when rappers like Dre, Snoop Dogg and Tupac Shakur forged mega-solo careers and Death Row Records' Suge Knight reigned as the industry's most powerful and feared hip-hop executive.

No music rights are attached to Death Row, which could complicate a studio deal, but Savidge brought the music rights to NWA after he and Alan Wenkus began writing Compton in 2002. At the time, the pair persuaded Eazy-E's widow and rights holder, Tomica. Woods-Wright to sign and set up the project at New Line (Universal eventually picked up the film in 2014).

Compton became a breakthrough for Universal, earning $141 million since its release on Aug. 14. The film, which cost $29 million to make, also held the top spot domestically three weekends in a row.

The F. Gary Gray-directed film has ignited the hip-hop biopic market: Morgan Creek and Emmett/Furla's Tupac is approaching the starting gate, with Carl Franklin on board to direct. The film would largely cover the West Coast rap era from the early 1990s - straddling the end of the Compton narrative (Tupac, played by Marcc Rose, appears in a scene near the end of Compton) - until Tupac's death in 1996.

Death Row Records is an American record label founded in 1991 by Dr. Dre, Suge Knight, the D.O.C., and Dick Griffey The label made a splash by releasing multi-platinum hip-hop albums from West Coast-based artists such as Dr. Dre (The Chronic), Snoop Dogg (Doggystyle), Tha Dogg Pound (Dogg Food), and Tupac (All Eyez on Me) in the 1990s. At its peak, Death Row was earning over $100 million U.S. a year.

In the late 1990s, the label began to decline after the death of its star artist, Tupac, the imprisonment of Suge Knight and the departures of Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg. Although Death Row was financially successful, it became embroiled in controversy, lawsuits, and violence from its artists and associates. Death Row Records filed for bankruptcy in 2006 and was sold at auction to WIDEawake Entertainment for $18 million on January 15, 2009. The owner of WIDEawake filed for bankruptcy in 2012 and the label was then sold to Entertainment One, and then became a division of Hasbro until April 2021, when eOne Music was sold to The Blackstone Group. Snoop Dogg purchased Death Row from MNRK Music Group in February 2022, with the intention of reviving the label.
